About this speaker

Dr Abdala obtained an honours BSc in Biomedical Research, an MSc in Pharmacology and a PhD in Physiology at the Federal University of Sao Paulo in Brazil. She then came to the UK as a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at the University of Bristol.

In 2012, she obtained a Research Fellowship from the International Rett Syndrome Foundation to study the neural origins of respiratory deficits in Rett syndrome. She is now a Lecturer in Cardiovascular Pharmacology at the University of Bristol. Dr Abdala has a special interest in rare diseases that affect breathing, the heart rhythm and blood pressure control and has been working closely with industry to validate a new drug treatment for breathing difficulties in Rett syndrome.

She maintains close collaborations with computational neuroscientists, clinical scientists, clinicians, patient advocacy groups and industrial partners and has been keenly contributing to every step of the drug validation journey. These collaborations have been essential for her success in moving her research from basic science, into validating a new drug in mouse models of Rett syndrome, and hopefully in the near future, into a new treatment for breathing problems in Rett syndrome.
